Collecting names of people with AIDS or suspected of carrying the fatal disease, as was done in Phoenix, Ariz., would be illegal in California, said the chief of the San Francisco Police Officers Assn. “I understand the concern, we share it, but there are laws to protect people’s privacy, whether we like them or not,” said Bob Barry. “It’s a very emotional issue, particularly with police officers because they come into contact with more high-risk people, with narcotics offenders and prostitutes who are at high risk,” he said. Acquired immune deficiency syndrome is spread through the exchange of body fluids such as semen and blood.
