A Coast Guard search-and-rescue station at Mare Island that has been closed since February because of budget cuts may reopen later this year thanks to an amended federal transportation bill. The amendment, approved last week by the House of Representatives, would allocate $4.8 million for reopening and operation of the Mare Island station and seven others throughout the country, including one at Lake Tahoe. The measure is expected to be considered this month by the Senate. The Mare Island station served an area of about 300 square miles. That territory is being handled by Coast Guard stations in Rio Vista and Yerba Buena.
