The Overwork Ethic

Reading “Why We Overwork” (by Joan Libman, June 13), I thought for a moment: They’re writing about me . . . 6 a.m., coffee brewing, computer humming, paper work spread out.

The only things you left out were: reading the paper for a clue as to what our calls will be about today, feeding the animals (myself included), retrieving last night’s phone messages, doing last night’s dishes, reading last night’s fax messages, ironing an outfit, taking out the garbage, responding to the fax messages, watering the patio, and listening to the early TV news to catch what the paper missed.

It may be that technology is exacting more from us than did the hammer and chisel. Somehow, I doubt it. For us women, technology is the current road to equal pay for equal work.
