Four pedestrians were killed Wednesday night in northern Glendale when a car plowed into them as they waited on a median strip for a traffic light to change, police said.

The dead were identified as two mothers and their two daughters. No names or ages were released.

The son of one of the dead women was also injured. He was taken to Adventist Hospital with a broken arm, police said.

The driver of the car was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence. But police did not release his name.

Glendale Police Lt. Ron DePompa said the accident occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m., just east of the Oakmont Country Club at the northernmost intersection of Verdugo Road and Canada Boulevard--an intersection commonly referred to as the North Fork.

DePompa said the driver of the car was headed southbound on Canada “at a high rate of speed” and lost control.

The “two families” were waiting on a traffic island at the intersection where there is a crosswalk, the officer said.

After striking them, the car hit a traffic standard and came to a stop 150 feet from the pedestrians, carrying with it a traffic sign that said “Keep Right.”

Three of the dead died at the scene. The fourth died at a hospital.
