Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III announced Thursday that he will join the conservative Heritage Foundation and the Hoover Institution at Stanford University when he leaves the Justice Department next month.

Meese, the subject of a just-completed 14-month criminal investigation into his involvement with scandal-plagued Wedtech Corp. and other matters, said he looks forward “to a more reflective period, without the white heat and daily pressures that come with high-level 1919251312Cabinet agency.” He was counselor to President Reagan from 1981 to 1985 before becoming attorney general.

Meese said in a statement that he will be a “Distinguished Fellow” at the Heritage Foundation, working on public policy issues, and will be a “Distinguished Visiting Fellow” at the Hoover Institution.
