12-Week-Old Boy Dies After Liver Transplant
The tiniest baby ever to receive a liver transplant died Thursday, two days after doctors divided a donated organ between him and another baby in the first U.S. operation of its type, a spokesman said.
Twelve-week-old Joseph Kovach died of heart failure at Wyler Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago Medical Center, spokesman John Easton said. The boy’s heart had stopped briefly after the transplant and he later suffered kidney and lung failure.
The other baby, a 7-month-old girl, was “doing very well” but was listed in critical and stable condition, Easton said.
