AMAZING STORIES: Yes, it’s true--Guy (Lombardo) Kemp is out at KMPC-FM. He resigned rather than take a midnight-shift offer. J. J. Jackson is in as new program director at the station. Station manager Bill Ward says the station will continue its New-Rock programming format, but rumors are already circulating that the low-rated station could be switching to a country music format as early as this fall. . . . It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that if you want a blast of free publicity, just have MTV ban your video. Neil Young is the latest beneficiary. His clip has been shown everywhere from the CBS Morning News to Anaheim’s KDOC-TV after MTV nixed it, citing lyric references to commercial products. . . . Of course that hasn’t stopped MTV from airing D.J. Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince’s “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” which plugs Adidas and Zips sneakers. Nor has it stopped MTV from airing Robert Plant’s Coke commercial, which features obvious outtakes from his “Tall Cool One” video. Even worse, MTV News reporter Kurt Loder did a story about the controversy over rock star corporate sponsorship. To illustrate the anti-corporate position, he aired portions of the Young clip--but somehow forgot to mention that his station had banned the clip itself.
