Angela Burnham of Rio Mesa High set a national age-group record in the 100 meters Saturday at the U. S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Indianapolis and advanced to today’s semifinals.

Burnham, this year’s state champion in both the 100 and 200 meters as a junior, set a national-best for 16-year-olds when she placed fifth in the second quarterfinal in 11.28 seconds.

The time shattered Burnham’s previous best of 11.52 and bettered the previous age-16 best of 11.34 set in 1980 by Sharon Ware of Berkeley High. It also moved Burnham to third on the all-time U. S. high school list.

Only Chandra Cheeseborough of Ribault High in Jacksonville, Fla. (11.13 in 1976) and Wendy Vereen of Central High in Trenton, N. J. (11.17 in 1983) have run faster in high school.

Burnham preceded her record run with a wind-aided 11.26 clocking to place fourth in an opening-round heat.
