20 on Deukmejian Treasurer List

Gov. George Deukmejian said today that 20 people are on his list of possible choices for state treasurer, but he virtually ruled out appointing any lawmaker who faces reelection in November.

Deukmejian, in an interview at his Capitol office, declined to identify those who are being considered. But the Republican governor said that “it would be a great risk in naming an incumbent that’s running for reelection,” because such a move would provide political ammunition to the appointee’s opponent. The governor’s comments presumably eliminate virtually every Senate contender for the position--Sens. Marian Bergeson of Newport Beach, Robert G. Beverly of Manhattan Beach, William Campbell of Hacienda Heights and John Seymour of Anaheim.
