The makers of Beaujolais, one of France’s most popular red wines, have taken legal action against a group of Australian wine makers who, they say, are abusing the Beaujolais name. Representatives of the French wine makers said they had instituted proceedings in the Australian Federal Court against seven Australian wine makers who have refused to stop marketing their production under the name of Beaujolais. “The production of this so-called Beaujolais bears no resemblance to that of the real Beaujolais,” Michel Deflache of the Beaujolais Wine Union said. “They (the Australian Beaujolais) are pretty sturdy wines, more like the wines of Bordeaux.”
