Seeking to capture a slice of a fast-growing segment of the personal computer industry, CMS Enhancements of Tustin has formed a new division to manufacture devices that link personal computers, printers and other machines within an office or factory.

CMS, a maker of hard-disk data storage devices for IBM personal computers and compatible machines, said its new division will market hard disks, cables and other products that connect personal computers in “local area networks.”

“In the personal computer portion of the industry, there is growing demand for placing personal computers in networks,” said Ted James, CMS marketing manager. “Networking really allows microcomputers to share other equipment on a network. That makes each microcomputer much more powerful.”

The market for personal computer networks is projected to grow rapidly during the next five years.

Network sales in the United States are estimated to total $1.2 billion this year, up 50% from $790 million in 1987, according to Dataquest, a Silicon Valley market research firm. By 1992, the market should grow to $3.3 billion.

CMS said the new division will not significantly increase its Orange County employment.
