Rothmans, Benson & Hedges Inc. has challenged Canada’s new laws banning advertising of tobacco products. Canada’s second-largest cigarette maker filed a statement in the Federal Court of Canada in Toronto, Rothmans attorney Bob Carew said after the annual meeting of Rothmans Inc., which owns 60% of Rothmans, Benson & Hedges. The company said such legislation represents discriminatory intervention in the marketplace. The law would phase out billboard tobacco ads by 1991 and signs promoting tobacco in shops by 1993.
