Five San Diego County artists were honored Thursday night by the California Arts Council at ceremonies in Long Beach that recognized 40 awardees in the council’s new fellowship program. The $5,000 fellowships, with no strings attached, were awarded in the categories of film and video and new genre. The local winners in the film and video category are Carroll Blue, an assistant professor of film at San Diego State University; Steve Fagin, a video artist living in La Jolla; and Louis Hock, a film and video artist on leave from the UC San Diego visual arts faculty. The San Diego fellows in the new-genre category are performance artist Guillermo Gomez-Pena and artist Mario F. Lara, a creator of large-scale architectural constructions. Nearly 550 artists applied for the 40 fellowships. The fellowships, which rotate among categories each year, will be awarded for literature in 1988-89 and visual and performing arts in 1989-90.
