American Express reported second-quarter net income of $281 million, contrasted with a loss of $600,000 last year. Revenue totaled $5.6 billion, up 22%. The firm’s Shearson Lehman Hutton unit posted profit of $51 million, off 20%, primarily because of nonrecurring expenses from the E. F. Hutton acquisition. Revenue reached $2.5 billion, up 47%.
