Police shot and wounded a 23- year-old Van Nuys man who tried to run officers down after a lengthy chase on the Golden State Freeway, authorities said Thursday.

Jeffrey Bock was in fair condition at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center jail ward, where he was under arrest on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Police said that at 11 p.m. Wednesday two officers saw Bock ducking down in a parked pickup truck near Woodman Avenue and Chase Street. When they investigated, he sped off. Police chased him north on residential streets and south on the Golden State Freeway.

Police said Bock attempted to leave the freeway on Sheldon Street in Sun Valley. He was cut off by a police car and rammed the truck into it.

Investigators said six officers approached the truck and ordered Bock to get out. Bock reversed, hitting an officer with the truck’s side and mirror but not injuring him. Officer Karl Parrick, 46, fired three shots through the windshield, investigators said.

Bock continued into the freeway, rebounding off the center barrier and striking a car. The driver of the car was not hurt. Police arrested Bock and discovered one of Parrick’s shots had hit him in the head.

Police said they found a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the pickup truck.
