Local News in Brief : Sprinkler Cost Estimate
The price tag for installing fire sprinklers and adopting other fire safety measures in high-rise buildings owned by Los Angeles County may be as much as $85.3 million, according to the county’s top financial officer.
In a memorandum to county supervisors, Chief Administrative Officer Richard B. Dixon estimated that it will cost $61.5 million to $85.3 million to provide safety devices in the county’s 23 high-rise buildings.
The board, alarmed by recent high-rise fires in downtown Los Angeles, is expected to vote on a draft ordinance that would require sprinklers in both private and publicly owned high-rises in unincorporated county territory.
Dixon’s memo, which was released Friday, provides cost estimates only for county-owned high-rises. The estimates, prepared by the county’s Facilities Management Department, range from $1.1 million for Patriotic Hall to $17.1 million for the downtown Criminal Courts Building.
