Manley Told Not to Report to Camp by Rozelle
Dexter Manley of the Washington Redskins was told not to report to training camp for at least several days by National Football League Commissioner Pete Rozelle, after the two met to discuss what the league described as a personal matter. Manley was scheduled to report to the Redskins’ training camp at Carlisle, Pa., today.
Earlier this week it was reported that traces of a “minor” substance had been found in Manley’s urine during a physical examination. Manley underwent rehabilitation for an alcohol problem in 1987.
Manley’s agent, Bob Woolf, said this week that Rozelle was meeting with the defensive end to inquire about suspected drug and alcohol abuse.
Rozelle told Manley during the hourlong meeting that he wanted to review additional information and that he would contact him over the next few days.
This was Manley’s second meeting with Rozelle this year. Woolf said it was his belief that Manley’s previous meeting with Rozelle addressed rumors surrounding the life style of the seven-year veteran.
