There appear to be some changing straws in the political wind worldwide. First I note our President has recommended compensation to the families of the victims in the unfortunate shooting down of the civilian airliner over the Persian Gulf, a compassionate gesture reflective of what America’s humanitarian goals ought to be. Next I read that Secretary of State George Shultz is recommending that the Chinese and Russians improve their relationship and arbitrate their differences. And now the Russians appear to be relaxing their military grip upon their Eastern satellites.

A successful completion of these proposals would indicate a new morality and fresh, new thinking among world leaders. New approaches are a hopeful sign that we can solve world problems through the reasoning process, without the use of force.

With the world moving in the direction of resolving conflict without violence, this is not the time to refuel the war in Central America by funding the Contras.
