Local News in Brief : Move Aimed at Smog

Share

In a move aimed at reducing air pollution, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power plans to mothball a portion of its oldest electrical power plant and increase production at its cleanest, most modern facility.

The DWP’s plans, to take effect in the next three weeks, involve shutting down two of the five steam boiler generating units at the aging Harbor Steam Plant in Wilmington, according to DWP air quality engineer Roger Pelote. At the same time, production capacity will be expanded at the newest unit in the Scattergood facility at El Segundo.

Harbor Units 1 and 2, built in 1943 and 1947, are the biggest polluters among the 18 boiler units at the four DWP power plants in the Los Angeles Basin. They are used infrequently, during heat waves or other times when extra electricity is needed.
