Storms, High Winds Hit Munich; 19 Hurt
Hail storms and hurricane winds injured at least 16 people and caused damage estimated at several million dollars in the West German state of Bavaria, police said Monday. Nine of the injuries occurred in traffic accidents Sunday with cars going out of control on busy highways flooded by heavy rain and hail, a police spokesman said. Several people, including two children, were injured by falling trees and roof tiles. Firemen answered 700 calls in Munich, the worst affected area, during the two -hour freak storm there. Nineteen streets were declared impassable, 300 sets of traffic lights were damaged and about 60 traffic accidents were recorded. Eight sheep were killed by falling trees in the city’s English Garden.
