Negotiations in the writers strike are in recess, but the war of words continues. In ads scheduled for this morning’s Hollywood trade papers, 170 writers declare support for Writers Guild of America and challenge claims that the Writers Coalition--an anti-strike group within the guild--speaks for the working writer. Among those who signed: Michael Mann (“Miami Vice”), Gary David Goldberg (“Family Ties”), William Goldman (“The Princess Bride”) and Peter Fischer (“Murder, She Wrote”). Some coalition members had said they would return to work if the strike wasn’t settled by this Thursday. A spokesman said he couldn’t know whether members would return to work until the status of the latest round of writer-producer talks becomes clear.
