Local News in Brief : Park Petition Meets Goal

Share

Opponents to construction of a civic center at West Hollywood Park were confident Tuesday that they have enough signatures to put the issue on the ballot.

The Save Our Park Alliance collected 2,806 signatures, 740 more than needed, said Tom Larkin, chairman of the Save Our Park Alliance and a candidate for the state Senate.

The petition requests that any existing or deeded park land, such as West Hollywood Park, Plummer Park and William S. Hart Park, be used solely for recreational purposes.

Under the measure, no city, county or state offices would be operated in West Hollywood Park, except for those involved in the management of park and recreation activities, Larkin said.

The West Hollywood city clerk’s office has 30 days to verify the signatures.

The issue would go on the ballot at a regularly scheduled municipal election, which is scheduled for 1990, Larkin said, adding that the city could place it on the ballot during a special municipal election in November.
