Local News in Brief : Anaheim : Pickler Announces He Will Run for Mayor

Share

Mayor Pro Tem Irv Pickler announced Tuesday that he will run for mayor in November. His announcement was expected.

City Councilman Fred Hunter has said he also intends to run.

Political observers have predicted a tight race between Pickler and Hunter for the mayor’s seat, which pays $800 a month plus $50 per meeting. The other four council members receive $400 per month.

Hunter has called the race a contest between old Anaheim and new Anaheim.

“That’s a wrong assessment,” Pickler said after his announcement Tuesday morning in front of City Hall. “What new ideas does (Hunter) have? . . . We have so much going for us we don’t have to change direction.”

Mayor Ben Bay, who defeated Pickler’s bid for the position in 1986, announced last week that he would not seek reelection or run for a seat on the City Council. He declined to give any reasons for his decision.

Pickler, 67, was elected to the council in 1982.
