Swarms of locusts have been sighted over northern Ethiopia, where unusually good rains are enabling farmers to plant crops again after a severe drought. The swarms in the Red Sea province of Eritrea have not yet caused crop damage, the Ethiopian News Agency reported, but recent rains could turn the north into an ideal breeding ground for the locusts. The swarms apparently came across the Red Sea from Saudi Arabia and from Ethiopia’s western neighbor, Sudan. Eritrea and its southern neighbor, Tigre, are having their first sustained rains after years of drought.
