Microsemi Corp.’s earnings for its third quarter ended June 26 declined 58% to $548,000 from $1.3 million in the year-earlier period. The Santa Ana-based semiconductor products company attributed the decline to losses totaling $1.6 million at three operations the company acquired in 1986 and 1987. Microsemi said it has begun a program to increase productivity and reduce costs at the money-losing units and “believes they should become profitable contributors” to the company in the future. Sales for the quarter rose 87% to $21.8 million from $11.7 million a year ago. For the nine months, earnings fell 59% to $1.6 million from $3.9 million, and sales rose 78% to $57.5 million from $32.2 million.
