Santa Monica : Mall Renovation Set to Begin

Share

Ground breaking is scheduled today for a $10-million renovation project at the old Santa Monica Mall--now called the Third Street Promenade.

The new name is only one part of a 4-year-old plan to upgrade the faded, aging mall and attract new business.

The outdoor mall, located along Third Street between Wilshire Boulevard and Broadway, is now closed to cars but will be reopened to limited traffic.

New trees, benches, art and additional parking are other elements in the project, which should be completed by fall of 1989. Officials hope to attract restaurants, movie theaters and other businesses to create night life at the mall.

The project is part of a program to revitalize Santa Monica’s downtown district, which has declined steadily for the last decade.
