An exhibition of items from Elton John’s collection, to be auctioned in September, goes on view today at Sotheby’s Beverly Hills office, 308 N. Rodeo Drive. Examples of Art Nouveau glass, decorative sculptures of the ‘20s and ‘30s and extravagant stage costumes are among the pieces to be displayed through Wednesday. The auction, Sept. 6-9 in London, will clean out the rock singer’s closets so that he can “change direction” and “go ultramodern” in his taste, according to a press release. The sale of about 2,000 lots is expected to total more than $5 million. That will make John richer, but he appears to have no hope of equaling Andy Warhol, whose posthumous 10-day auction of 10,000 lots fetched $25.3 million.
