Reagan Extends Jackson Secret Service Guard
President Reagan has granted the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination, a 30-day extension of Secret Service protection, a White House spokesman said today.
Jackson had asked for the protection to run through the November election “based on an assessment of threats against his life and his plan to be an active participant” in Michael S. Dukakis’ campaign for the presidency.
White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said the President personally directed that Jackson be given the Secret Service protection for 30 days retroactive to July 22, the end of the Democratic National Convention. Fitzwater said this will provide a transition period during which Jackson can make private security arrangements.
He said the additional protection for Jackson will cost the federal government $600,000.
