American Andre Cason raced to victory in the men’s 100-meter dash to highlight action at the World Junior Track and Field Championships on Thursday.

Cason, a member of Texas A & M’s NCAA-winning 400-meter relay team, was timed in 10.22 seconds, well off his personal best of 10.08, which won the U. S. Junior championships in Tallahassee, Fla., last month.

Though Cason, 19, was hoping to break Stanley Floyd’s world junior record of 10.07, he wasn’t disappointed, “because I’m a world champion.”

Sven Matthes of East Germany placed second in 10.28.

In the women’s 100, East German Diana Dietz edged teammate Kathrin Krabbe for the gold in a meet-record 11.17.

Angela Burnham of Rio Mesa High, the 1988 California state high school 100 and 200 champion as a junior, placed sixth in 11.73.

Burnham’s time was well off the age-16 national record of 11.28 that she set at the recent U. S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis.

Krabbe, who ran 11.23, is the world junior record-holder in the 100 at 10.89, but said if she couldn’t win, she was pleased another East German took the gold.

“And a second place is pretty good when you have worldwide competition,” she said through an interpreter.

Six gold medals were awarded on the second of five days of competition for athletes aged 19 and under.

East Germany won another gold medal when Ines Wittich set a meet record of 60-10 in the women’s shotput.
