Area Roundup : Tustin Pony League All-Stars Win County Title to Advance

The Tustin All-Stars won their third consecutive Orange County Pony League championship last week at Harvard Park in Irvine.

The 4-day, 28-team tournament concluded Sunday when Tustin defeated Los Alamitos, 10-2, in the final of the double-elimination tournament.

Tustin swept its six games, outscoring its opponents, 34-8.

Dan Strapp of Orange led the Tustin team with 3 home runs and 25 RBIs in the six games. Tim Wilson of Tustin was the winning pitcher in both of the final-round games.

Tustin will travel to the San Diego area for the Southern California Pony League Championships that run today through Sunday at La Mesa Pony League Field.

The winner of the Southern California tournament will advance to Wednesday’s Western Regional tournament at La Mesa. The winner of the regional will advance to the Pony League World Series, Aug. 11, in Pennsylvania.

Tustin, which lost in the final of the Western regional last year, is coached by Tim O’Donoghue and assistants Greg Jennings and Sean O’Donoghue.

The International Basketball Assn. will hold its second regional tryouts for a team of players 6-feet 4-inches and under, Aug. 6-7 at Kennedy High School.

Five local players will be chosen to participate in the national tryouts, which will be held in Fullerton later in August. A team of 11 then will travel to Manila for the second International Championship tournament, which begins Sept. 18.

Players must have graduated from high school before August, 1984, to be eligible.

The Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club will play host to the Southwest Division of the American Lawn Bowling Assn.’s Marcelius Joslyn mixed triples tournament, Aug. 6-7.

The competition begins at 9 a.m. and will feature 144 bowlers. The tournament is open to the public.

The Tustin Unified School District has positions open for head and assistant coaches of boys’ and girls’ sports at the junior high and high school level. The positions include coaching of baseball, basketball, cross-country, football (assistant only), soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball and water polo.
