Costa Mesa’s Schwartz Continues Success in Speedway Scratch Events

Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa won the four-lap scratch main event Friday in front of 3,256 in the weekly speedway program at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

It was the ninth scratch main event victory for Schwartz in the past 17 weeks. Starting from the third spot, Schwartz took the lead on the second turn and never trailed. It was his third scratch main victory this week; he earlier won races in San Bernardino and Ascot.

Shawn McConnell of Brea was second, Gary Hicks of Glen Avon third and Alan Christian of Murietta fourth.

Trinon Cirello, 17, of Newport Beach won the eight-lap handicap main event. Cirello is a junior at Newport Harbor High School. Steve Russell of Anaheim was second, Keith Larsen of Long Beach third.

Tim Gewecke won the five-lap second-division main.
