Local News in Brief : United Cable Gets 5th Extension for System

Share

The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday gave United Cable Television another extension--its fifth since 1985--to complete its east San Fernando Valley cable TV system.

The firm, which has been fined a total of $271,000 in recent years for failing to meet council-imposed deadlines, was given another six months and now has until Dec. 31 to complete its 935-mile system.

As of June 30, said Susan Herman, general manager of the city Department of Telecommunications, the firm had installed 760 miles of cable and activated 645 miles.

Communities within United’s franchise area that still do not have service are in North Hollywood, Sherman Oaks, Studio City and Toluca Lake.

Herman said that of 185,000 households in the franchise area, 97,000 have been offered service and 51,000 have paid for service.

United was awarded the East Valley franchise in 1983 on the promise that it would complete the system by December, 1985.

Herman said she recommended the fifth extension “because there is real progress and there is a good chance now that they will make it by the end of the year.” No additional fines were imposed with Tuesday’s extension.
