WASHINGTON — The Congressional Black Caucus on Tuesday accused Japanese companies of using advertising and marketing practices that are offensive to American blacks.
The lawmakers accused three Japanese firms of producing products and mannequins that show blacks in a degrading light.
One firm, the Sanrio Co., has said its line of toys and beachwear, which portray Little Black Sambo with large white eyes and a round, black face, was not meant to offend blacks. Another, the Yamato Mannequin Co., said its black mannequins’ exaggerated racial features were not intended to be racist.
