Patty Fendick on Tuesday became the second No. 1-seeded player to be knocked by injury from the $100,000 Virginia Slims of San Diego women’s tennis tournament at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.

Fendick, bothered by a pulled muscle in her left calf, won the first game against qualifier Jennifer Santrock of Plano, Tex., but lost the next six before retiring. She said she first felt a twinge in the second game.

The event lost its original No. 1-seeded player when Lori McNeil withdrew late last week with a knee injury. Last year’s finalists, winner Rafaella Reggi of Italy and Anne Minter of Australia, did not enter.
