Local News in Brief : Costa Mesa : Slow-Growth Measure Placed on Nov. 6 Ballot
The City Council has asked state officials to determine the legality of petitions calling for a slow-growth initiative on Costa Mesa’s Nov. 6 ballot.
The council also voted to place the slow-growth initiative on the November ballot, pending a reply from the state.
In a 3-1 decision, the council voted early Tuesday to ask state officials whether petitions containing about 5,000 signatures are valid even though several petitions’ wording did not meet state requirements.
Councilman Dave Wheeler cast the dissenting vote Tuesday. Councilwoman Mary Hornbuckle was absent.
The contested petitions, gathered by Costa Mesa Residents for Responsible Growth, call for an initiative similar to the county slow-growth proposal that was defeated in June. That measure would have tied future development to improvements in roads and highways, public safety and flood control.
The Costa Mesa residents group has said it will file amended petitions within several weeks, which City Atty. Thomas Wood has said would resolve the legality issue.
