Local News in Brief : Slick Found on River

Share

A petroleum substance, possibly oil, leaked into the San Gabriel River early Wednesday, but slowly dissipated.

Long Beach fire officials noticed a heavy sheen on the river in the early morning and notified the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, which dispatched a crew to follow the slick upstream.

By the time workers found the source at an underground storm drain system near Imperial Highway at the Downey-Norwalk border, the leak had stopped, according to Jean Granucci, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

The substance could have come from as far east as Santa Fe Springs, where the drain originates.
