Local News in Brief : Dial-a-Ride Fares to Drop

Share

Dial-a-ride fares on the Palos Verdes Peninsula will be cut to $1 from $1.50 for the first four miles because of declining ridership, Councilwoman Jacki Bacharach told the Rancho Palos Verdes City Council on Tuesday.

Bacharach, a member of the Peninsula Transit Authority, said there is no explanation for the drop in ridership, but she said authority members believe that lowering the fares will encourage more riders to use the service. The change takes effect Sept. 1.

Peninsula Dial-a-Ride is a curb-to-curb taxi service for the elderly and disabled in Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills Estates, Palos Verdes Estates and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County on the peninsula.

The first four miles in the taxi actually will cost $8, with riders paying $1 and the authority $7. The authority’s share comes from special county sales taxes earmarked for transportation. After four miles, the rider must pay the regular meter fare.

“It’s unbelievable that (ridership) is falling off because it’s such a good deal,” Rancho Palos Verdes Mayor Robert E. Ryan said.
