The State - News from Aug. 4, 1988

A Los Angeles division of the state Court of Appeal denied without comment an insurance industry lawsuit seeking an order to knock the Ralph Nader-backed “Voter Revolt” insurance initiative off the November statewide ballot. The industry sued May 18, alleging, among other things, that the initiative violated a state rule against initiatives dealing with more than a single subject. The Voter Revolt measure--rolling back all property and casualty rates, including automobile, 20% from those prevailing on Nov. 8, 1987--would require approval of all future rate increases by the state insurance commissioner and would provide for the popular election of the commissioner. But the three-judge panel, after calling for briefs and mulling over the matter for several weeks, simply wrote “denied” on the industry petition. The industry has 10 days to appeal to the state Supreme Court.
