Des McAnuff, artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse, may have talked about doing Lee Blessing’s play “Eleemosynary” at the Playhouse, but it is the Gaslamp Quarter Theatre that will actually give the play its West Coast premiere Feb. 15 through April 15 at its small theater. Blessing’s story of three generations of women kicks off the Gaslamp’s 1989 season in its 99-seat house. At the 250-seat Hahn Cosmopolitan, the Gaslamp will present the San Diego premieres of Herb Gardner’s “I’m Not Rappaport,” Jan. 18 through Feb. 26; Beth Henley’s “The Wake of Jamey Foster,” March 22 through April 29; Anne Commire’s “The Melody Sisters,” Sept. 13 through Oct. 22; Noel Coward’s “Hay Fever,” Nov. 8 through Dec. 17; and one or two plays to be announced for May through September. After “Eleemosynary” at the Gaslamp Quarter Theatre next year will be “The Day Room,” a first play by novelist Don DeLillo, May 3 through July 22; “The Return of Herbert Bracewell, or Why Am I Always Alone When I’m With You?” by Andrew Johns, Aug. 24 through Sept. 30; and a to-be-announced world premiere Oct. 18 through Dec. 17.
