Former Reseda auto dealer Harvey Rader, whom police have called the chief suspect in the 1982 disappearance of a San Fernando Valley family, was released Friday from federal prison in Phoenix after serving a sentence for attempting to obtain a U.S. passport in someone else’s name.

Rader, a British citizen, was immediately taken into custody by agents of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, who obtained a court order requiring him to show cause why he should not be deported.

A hearing was scheduled for Tuesday, when Rader is expected to ask to be released on bail pending a decision on whether he should be deported.

“I am told the INS will urge the federal judge to deny bail,” said Duane Peterson, a spokesman for the California attorney general’s office.

That office is considering an unusual request from Los Angeles police to charge Rader with murdering Northridge resident Sol Salomon, his wife and two children.

Police made the request after the Los Angeles district attorney’s office concluded that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute Rader.
