KENT, Wash. — National elapsed time records were set in all three professional categories during qualifying for the $563,450 National Hot Rod Assn. Seafair Nationals Saturday at Seattle International Raceway.
Top fuel racer Darrell Gwynn, four-time Winston funny car champion Don Prudhomme and defending pro stock champion Bob Glidden ran the quickest times in NHRA history in the final two rounds of qualifying for the inaugural event.
Perfect drag racing conditions, cool temperatures and overcast skies helped drivers produce record-breaking times. Gwynn, of Miami, was clocked in his dragster at 5.053 seconds, Prudhomme was timed in 5.305 in his Pontiac Trans Am and Glidden recorded a 7.319 in his Ford Thunderbird.
To set a national record in NHRA racing, a driver must come within 1% of his record mark during the same meet before it becomes official.
