Tennis Roundup : Becker, McEnroe Meet Again
Top-seeded Boris Becker of West Germany and fifth-seeded John McEnroe scored difficult victories Saturday to advance to the final of the $415,000 U.S. Men’s Hardcourt Tennis Championships at Indianapolis.
Becker, who has not played a seeded opponent in the tournament, struggled while eliminating Todd Witsken, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. McEnroe, trying to regain the form that gave him four U.S. Open titles and three Wimbledon championships, defeated 15th-seeded Robert Seguso, 7-5, 6-3.
Today’s final will be the first match between Becker and McEnroe since a marathon Davis Cup encounter last year. Becker emerged a 4-6, 15-13, 8-10, 6-2, 6-2, winner in 6 hours 20 minutes, the second-longest match in Davis Cup history.
Amateur Ann Grossman, qualifying for a championship series final for the first time, defeated fourth-seeded Rosalyn Fairbank, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, in the semifinals of a $100,000 Virginia Slims tournament in San Diego.
In the other semifinal, second-seeded Stephanie Rehe beat amateur Debbie Graham, 6-2, 6-2.
Defending champion Emilio Sanchez of Spain and Kent Carlsson of Sweden will play in today’s final of a $290,000 clay court tournament at Kitzbuhel, Austria.
Sanchez, seeded fourth, beat unseeded Luis Mattar of Brazil, 6-3, 6-4, and in the longest match of the tournament, the third-seeded Carlsson outlasted second-seeded Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. The match lasted 2 hours 40 minutes.
