For how long will McCarthy hold California’s environment hostage to his own political ambitions? The letters (July 26) cannot hide the lieutenant governor’s reckless abandonment, which now imperils our national shoreline.

The recent Johnston-sponsored McCarthy-supported bill clearly exemplifies our lieutenant governor’s harmful point of view. By temporarily slowing offshore oil production off the California coast, McCarthy not only impaired California’s ability to fend off future exploration but, as a fringe benefit, gave the green light to oil companies to ravage the Alaskan coastline.

While Alaskans up north pay for McCarthy’s political maneuvering, citizens who appreciate the desert in our back yard stand next in McCarthy’s line of fire. McCarthy supports a bill that prohibits all feasible access to the Mojave Desert, keeping our state’s precious treasure away from those who enjoy it the most.
