Local News in Brief : Huntington Beach : Growth Group to Hear About Oil Opposition

Share

Residents who have been battling nearly two years to block a $25-million oil-drilling project proposed for their neighborhood by Angus Petroleum will lobby for citizen support at a meeting Aug. 17.

Members of Concerned Citizens of Huntington Beach will speak at the 7:30 p.m. monthly meeting of Huntington Beach Tomorrow, an organization that advocates controlled growth and traffic.

The meeting will be held at 18460 Gothard St. and those attending should bring a chair.

As part of an out-of-court lawsuit settlement, Concerned Citizens in April forced Angus to relinquish city approval for the drilling operation and reapply for permits, which it has done. Planning Commission consideration of its new application may come as soon as September.

The citizens charged that the permits were granted on a vote that was illegal because former City Councilman John A. Thomas did subcontracting work for Angus before providing the swing vote in October, 1987.

Angus Petroleum, which wants to drill up to 60 new wells on its property near Delware and Springfield streets, is said also to be planning community meetings at which company representatives will present their side of the issue.
