A mysterious virus has killed 134 seals in the coastal waters of the northern West German state of Schleswig-Holstein over the weekend, officials said Monday.

That raises the number of seals who have died from the virus in Schleswig-Holstein coastal waters to 2,098, said a spokesman for the state’s Environment Ministry.

Thousands of other seals suffering from the virus have died off the coasts of the Netherlands and Scandinavia.

The virus struck North Sea seals earlier this year. West German environmentalists blame it on waste from industry.
