Profits from the yearlong Orange County Centennial festivities will go into a scholarship fund for seniors graduating from local high schools, centennial officials announced Wednesday. Babies born to Orange County parents between Aug. 1, 1988 and Aug. 1, 1989, will also be able to apply for college tuition assistance, according to officials of Orange County Centennial Inc., which is staging centennial events. The estimated 45,000 babies born during the year will get “Official Orange County Centennial Baby” stamps on their birth certificates.

The centennial year opened with $300,000 in the scholarship fund, but the fund is expected to grow through the year. The numbers and amounts of the scholarships will not be known until after the books are balanced at the end of the year, officials said.

Scholarships will be awarded beginning in 1989 and will continue for several years.
