Storm Damage Worst in 30 Years, China Says

A typhoon that slammed into an eastern province killed 110 people and destroyed bridges, dams and ships in the worst economic loss from a storm in China in 30 years, press reports said Wednesday.

The official New China News Agency said 81 people were missing and 1,184 were injured after the typhoon hit Zhejiang province Monday with 75 m.p.h. winds. The storm collapsed 155 bridges, washed away 27 miles of dikes and dams and destroyed 1,048 ships, it said.

The China News Service said in a report monitored in Hong Kong that 144,500 homes were destroyed. It estimated losses at $270 million.
