Local News in Brief : Testimony on Toy Guns

Los Angeles TV reporter David Horowitz, who was held hostage by a man brandishing a toy gun, called on Congress Thursday to regulate the toy industry.

Appearing before a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee, Horowitz compared toy guns to real ones to show how hard it is to tell one from the other.

The committee is considering banning realistic toy guns or requiring bright marks on the barrels of replicas.

“I’m not trying to take away a child’s squirt gun or cap pistol,” Horowitz said. “But I think we have to be aware of the potential for misuse of such toys and replicas.”

During a broadcast last August, a man entered the studio wielding a replica of a .45-caliber handgun and tried to force Horowitz to read a statement over the air.
