Local News in Brief : Chief Returning to Work
The Southern California Rapid Transit District confirmed Friday that its police chief, James Burgess, who had faced allegations of misconduct, will resume his duties Monday after a six-week leave.
RTD General Manager Alan Pegg in Los Angeles issued a statement saying Burgess is returning to work after a personnel hearing earlier this week. But citing the “strict nature of the state’s personnel laws,” Pegg declined to comment on whether disciplinary action was taken against the police chief or what an internal investigation found.
A district spokesman indicated that the RTD will cooperate with a district attorney’s office investigation into allegations that Burgess violated the state’s anti-ticket fixing law. Burgess has denied wrongdoing and sued the district for violating his due-process rights during the investigation. He was accused of ticket-fixing, discrimination, nepotism and conflict of interest by a former RTD police officer.
