Dalziel’s 65 Equals Tournament Record in First Round of Syracuse Senior Event
Doug Dalziel shot a 7-under-par 65 Friday to lead a first-round charge of non-winners in the $250,000 Syracuse Senior golf tournament.
Dalziel, whose best previous finish was seventh in last year’s Kaanapali event in Hawaii, tied the tournament record with his opening round on the Lafayette Country Club.
Lou Graham and Jim Hatfield, who like Dalziel have never won a PGA Seniors Tour event, were in second place at 66. George Lanning, also seeking his first senior victory, shot a 67.
Two-time defending champion Bruce Crampton was among three golfers at 68, joining Dave Hill and former New York Yankees pitcher Ralph Terry.
Dalziel, 51, started the round on the back nine in uneventful form until he birdied the par-5 12th hole. He coupled a birdie and an eagle on Nos. 16 and 17 for a 4-under-par 32 after nine holes.
On the front nine (his last nine), he added four more birdies but bogeyed No. 3 to miss breaking the tournament record set last year by Crampton.
Graham had five birdies and a hole-in-one on the 164-yard, par-3 sixth hole. A pair of bogeys cost him the lead.
